Client Preparation Photography: Your Essential Guide

Keeland Griffith Photography

Okay, I booked... now what?

Right after booking:

Check out the client prep guide for location tips and decide on the perfect backdrop for your photos. Browse through the styling guide to start thinking about the colors and tones you want to wear. Additionally, please fill out the post-booking questionnaire. This will help me understand your goals and visions for the photography session preparation so we can ensure everything aligns perfectly.

At least a month before:

OUTFITS! It's time to start seriously looking at options and ordering or shopping, as outlined in this client prep guide. Give yourself enough time to explore another option in case something doesn't fit right. Remember to book all those appointments, such as hair, make-up, nails, and spray tan. While these preparations are totally optional, I have some fantastic recommendations for local stylists who can boost your confidence and beauty for your photography session. These family photography tips will help you feel your best on the big day!

A week before:

Have everyone try on their outfits as part of your client prep guide to ensure they fit! This is not a problem you want to battle with on picture day. Start discussing the photoshoot using family photography tips, setting expectations and even practicing smiling a few times. Make the photography session preparation feel like a really fun adventure. You can frame it as a beautiful walk at sunset with a new friend, playing in the grass, and enjoying an intentional family evening—maybe even treating yourselves to dinner or dessert afterwards!

Day of:

DON'T GET STRESSED! Easier said than done, I know. But everyone else is going to feed off your energy; if you're rushing or panicking, they will too. Kids are going to be kids, and life is going to be life. I can edit out stains, skinned knees, and mouth crusties, but I can't edit out anyone who is upset or stressed. Keep it calm and really hype up the 'family adventure'—that's one of the essential family photography tips. To help you stay relaxed during this important photography session preparation, pack a bag with: alternative comfy shoes if you're wearing heels, snacks for kids that won't stain (like puffs or crackers), makeup for touch-ups, a compact mirror, tissues for runny noses, and extra diapers/wipes/etc.

After your session:

You can expect your gallery to be delivered to your email within 2-3 weeks. I won't lie; waiting to see them isn’t easy. However, I’ve found that everyone prefers to receive a stunning, hand-edited, and hand-retouched gallery of images. This choice is far more rewarding than a quicker turnaround with less of that 'wow' factor. Art takes time, and I never want to rush that process! As part of the client prep guide, I encourage you to check out my family photography tips to help with your photography session preparation.
